100% Clean Energy by 2040 Pledge

Imagine a world where every home, every factory, and every vehicle runs on 100% clean energy sourced from the sun, wind, water, and other renewable sources. Picture streets free from smog, skies clear and blue, and lungs breathing fresh, unpolluted air. With renewable energy, there would be a drastic reduction in harmful emissions like carbon dioxide, the main culprit behind climate change. This shift would not only benefit the environment but also safeguard our economy and communities.

At Frederick University, we have developed an energy policy to steer decisions related to sustainable energy use and achieve a reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions, with the purpose of mitigating the environmental impact of the institution by 2030 by 55% in line with the ‘Fit for 55 package’ of the European Commission.

Our pledge

- Regulatory compliance: At a minimum, we shall fully abide by all legal and other requirements related to energy management as
specified under Cyprus Law and relevant EU and national directives and guidelines (e.g. EU Directive 2018/2002/EC, EU Directive
2018/844/EC, EU Directive 2018/2001/EC)
- Building construction and renovation: We shall treat energy efficiency as the factor with the highest weight in any decisions
taken for renovation or new building construction for the university, in compliance with a regulatory framework on nearly zero energy
buildings, as well as implement a review cycle on progress in order to ensure that a process of continuous improvement is
achieved.
- Renewable energy use in buildings: By 2030 all buildings in which the University operates and are owned directly or indirectly
by the University (more than 80% of used premises) shall reach 80% renewable energy use and that existence of renewable
energy will be a key factor in the renegotiation of new leases. Furthermore, by 2040 the University will use 100% of its energy from
renewable sources.
- Regular Energy Audits: We shall maintain, track, and provide - where necessary - information regarding energy efficiency
matters, including energy audits.
- Fossil fuel divestment: No investments of the university are or will be made in fossil-fuel industries and the university shall have
no financial assets (such as stocks in related companies) that are primarily related to carbon-intensive activities.
- Raising awareness on energy savings: We shall ensure that all members of the community are appropriately aware of the
importance of energy saving and mechanisms through which this can be achieved.

To fulfill this commitment and achieve all the above we need your support and we urge you to sign this pledge.

Your signature is a promise to stand for a sustainable future.

Together, we can build a more sustainable and resilient world for current and future generations.

As a Frederick University student, I pledge to actively support and advocate for the transition to 100% renewable energy.
Recognizing the critical role that young people play in shaping the future, I commit to:

• Educating myself and others about the benefits of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power.
• Raising awareness among my peers about the importance of renewable energy and its potential to combat climate change and environmental degradation.
• Engaging with campus administration to encourage the adoption of renewable energy solutions on campus, such as solar panels, and energy-efficient infrastructure.
• Participating in student-led initiatives and campaigns aimed at promoting renewable energy policies and practices both within the university and in the broader community.
• Incorporating sustainable energy principles into my academic studies, research projects, and extracurricular activities to contribute to innovative solutions and advancements in renewable energy technologies.
• Supporting renewable energy projects in the University community.
• Reducing my personal carbon footprint by implementing energy-efficient practices and investing in renewable energy solutions for my home, transportation, and lifestyle.
• Holding governments, businesses, and institutions accountable for their commitments to renewable energy transition and push for ambitious and achievable renewable energy targets.
• Collaborating with diverse stakeholders to build a sustainable, equitable, and resilient energy future for all.
• Supporting divestment from fossil fuel investments and the redirection of university funds towards renewable energy projects and sustainable initiatives.
• Collaborating with fellow students, faculty members, and local stakeholders to advocate for policies and initiatives that promote the rapid transition to 100% renewable energy at local, national, and global level.

By taking this pledge, I am committed to leveraging my position as a university student to drive positive change towards a future powered by 100% renewable energy.
