Dr. Demetris Nicolaides holds Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), as well as MSc in Structural Engineering from the Cardiff University, UK. From the same school he received his PhD in Civil Engineering in 2004, in the research area of fracture and fatigue of High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCCs). He is currently an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Frederick University in Cyprus. He worked as a civil engineering consultant in Greece and Cyprus, being involved in large scale projects. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute, member of the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), member of the Association of Civil Engineers of Cyprus, approved Technical Expert of the Cyprus Certification Company (Concrete Industry, Cement, Aggregates, Lime, Mines), member of the National Technical Committees for the application of European Standards and Specifications for Construction Products in Cyprus and Chair of the National Technical Committee for Eurocode 2 (Concrete Structures). Dr. Nicolaides’ most recent research focuses on 1) the effective reuse of waste construction materials in concrete mixes, either as cement or aggregate replacements, 2) impact and blast resistance of UHPFRCCs and finally, 3) the effectiveness of supplementary cementitious materials, recycled concrete aggregates and internal curing agents in mitigating thermal cracking of concrete. He has published research work in the fields of Concrete Technology, UHPFRCCs (development, properties and blast resistance) and modelling of the constitutive behavior of UHPFRCCs. Dr Nicolaides has taught graduate and undergraduate level courses on such topics as Construction Materials, Fracture Mechanics, Design of Concrete Structures, etc.
