Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Understand the basic concepts, methodological approaches, and technological components of an Environmental Impact Assessment.
  2. Identify all applicable European Norms, National Codes and Standards concerning the environment and energy systems.
  3. Exhibit knowledge and understanding of the way that an EIA is conducted within the framework of the energy sector in Cyprus and in the EU.
  4. Effectively participate in EIA teams for either off-shore or land-based oil & gas exploration and processing systems
  5. Monitor the terms and conditions dictated in an EIA.
  6. Participate in teams that implement Emergency Response Plans (as these are elaborated in an EIA).

Module A - Environmental Legislation & EIA LegalProcedures

Module B - Basic Concepts & Methodological Approaches

·    Basic concept of EIA:Initial environmental Examination.

·    Elements of EIA.

·    Factors affecting EIAImpact evaluation and analysis.

·     Preparation of Environmental Base map.

·    Classification ofenvironmental parameters.

·    EIA Methodologies:introduction.

·    Criteria for theselection of EIA Methodology.

·    EIA Methods

o   predictivemethods.

o   environmentalrisk assessment.

o   economicmethods.

 

Module C - Technical Components of Environmental ImpactAssessment

·    Basic conceptspertaining to an EIA for:

o   MarineEnvironment (i.e. coastal, offshore).

o   TerrestrialEnvironment (i.e. soil, water).

o   Air.

o   Faunaand Flora (marine / terrestrial).

·    Impact prediction.

·    Assessment of Impactsignificance.
