Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Identify the main components of a computer system – Input, Output, Memory, CPU.
  2. Identify the main uses of a computer system and identify the main differences between Hardware and Software.
  3. Use the Internet effectively as a source of Information and Communication.
  4. Create professional reports using all the tools provided by word processing software.
  5. Use formulae to analyze data, create charts and tables using spreadsheet software

Course Contents

Introduction to computer systems: Input Devices, Output Devices, Memory Devices (main and secondary), role of the CPU.

Computer Systems (Hardware and Software): Data input, processing, storage and output.  Use of computer systems in different types of organizations.  Hardware and Software needed as well as Networks and Storage devices.

Internet & Email: Search Engines and use of keywords as well as other search techniques to find information using the Internet.  Managing emails (sending, receiving, replying, forwarding)

Microsoft Word: Create new documents based on built in templates.  Formatting the text appropriately.  Creating and applying new or built in styles.  Creating Tables.  Inserting graphics. Using sections, columns, shapes.  Inserting automatic table of contents.

Microsoft Excel: Use cell formatting.  Create simple mathematical operations ( , -, /, *). Use build in functions (sum, average, count, counta, max, min, if, sumif, countif).  Fill in a formula / function containing relative and absolute cell references.  Create Charts and Tables. Conditional formatting. Printing.
