Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explain the content of the lesson: Introduction to the Middle East, peace keeping procedure in the Middle East, Jerusalem, Zionism – Arabic nationalism, Jihad, Ottoman empire – Turkish Republic. The relations of the Arabic world with Turkey, Greece and Cyprus.
  2. Apply the basic principles for analysing and presenting political issues.
  3. Analyse the political development in the area of the eastern Mediterranean in the 20th century.
  4. Evaluate the procedures and contradictions of modernisation of the Arabic world, the role of Israel, Cyprus, Greece and Turkey in the specific area, and the relations of the area with the western world in the context of the international system.
  5. Create and present articles and reports on the specific subject.

Course Contents

Islam, Theology, Morals and Power. The Arabic nationalism, the Arabic socialism. The Islamic extremism.

Egypt , Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Israel, Palestine.

The Ottoman Empire, the Turkish Republic.

The relations of the Arabs with Turkey, Greece and Cyprus.

Terrorism.

Racism.

The role of the woman in Islam.

Immigration policies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of the course is delivered to the students by means of lectures. Lecture notes are available for students to use with the textbooks. Other methods used beside the lecture, are discussions and presentations.
