Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Outline the most important texts of the most important modern Cypriot writers.
  2. Analyze in depth the main texts of the most important modern Cypriot writers.
  3. Justify the importance of the translation of literature and its role in the dissemination of works abroad.
  4. Describe the main currents and historical Cypriot writers.
  5. Compare the use of language in texts written in standard modern Greek and the Cypriot language variety.

Course Contents

An in depth investigation into the main trends that lead to the formation of Cypriot contemporary literature.

The main literary texts of modern cypriot writers are taught. Concepts and meanings are analyzed.

Interpretation of the influences on the formation of modern cypriot literature from abroad as well as from the historical experience and social evolution in Cyprus.

The new global-european values and the rise of Cypriot literature after the Second World War.

The importance of translation of Cypriot literature into foreign languages and its role for the dissemination of Cypriot literature abroad. Interpretation of statistics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students are taught by means of face to face lectures, lecture notes prepared by the instructor are available in print and electronically, combined with a rich list of recommended bibliography apart from the use of the main textbooks. Internet sources as well as audiovisual material is also used.
