Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explain the influence of socio-political conditions and technological progress in creating and developing the mass media communication internationally and locally.
  2. Describe the role played by MMC in various chronological periods of modern history of Cyprus. Compare facts and come to a conclusion.
  3. Analyze the role of mass media on important historical events and make comparisons to draw conclusions.
  4. Explain and evaluate the influence of ideological and political currents in the journalistic language and interaction between journalism and politics.
  5. Give ideas and organize research projects for historical periods of journalism in Cyprus.
  6. Analyze and present in the form of journalistic reportage the history of journalism in Cyprus and demonstrate how it affected the political and social life in Cyprus.

Course Contents

The Cyprus Press:

Definition of the political, social and economic situation leading to the introduction of the Press in Cyprus. The  first newspapers and Theodoulos Constantinides’ role as the founder of  Cypriot journalism.

The key stages of the Cypriot journalism:

The early years, the first newspapers, the new trends and social criticism (1910 - 1940),   militant journalism and colonial censorship (1940-1960), Republic of Cyprus and Journalism, 1990's and private broadcasting, digital platforms, digital TV.

Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation:

The public broadcaster  the Rebublic of Cyprus. Founded and historical development of CyBC. The role and importance of CyBC under Republic conditions. CyBC Radio and TV services.

Cyprus News Agency:

The history of the CNA. The structure, the function and the services of CNA. The role of CAN to the public sphere of Cyprus. Participation and action in international and regional organizations of the News Agencies

The private TV:

Television and its role. The private television, legal framework and function. The island-wide television channels and their role in the public sphere.

Radio:

The development of radio. State and private radio. Nationwide and regional media, information, music - entertainment, sports.

Magazines in Cyprus:

The appearance, development and characteristic of the  magazines in Cyprus

The ethnic multi-media in Cyprus:

English, Turkish, Armenian, Arabic, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, e.t.c media in Cyprus.
