Master of Science in Physical Education & Sports

The Programme is currently under evaluation by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education. It is expected that the Programme will be accredited and offered in the academic year 2016-2017.

Program’s language of instruction: Greek.

Duration of studies:

The duration of the Master Program is 3 semesters with a total of 90 ECTS (Table 1), with workload of 30 ECTS per semester. Each student is required to get four (4) compulsory courses. The purpose of these courses is to help students develop a deep background in the area of physical education and sports, no matter what the specialization is going to be. In addition, these courses are taught: three (3) courses during the first (fall) and one (1) course during the second (spring) semester of studies.  

Program’s purpose and objectives:

The purpose of the suggested Master Program is to produce capable and efficient scientists in both cultivation and advancement of academic teaching and research in this particular science based on international practices and the needs of Cypriot society,  and the building up of scientific background for continuous development of scientific knowledge  in all means of Physical Education and Sports.

The main objective of the Master Program in “Physical Education & Sports” is the deepening of scientific knowledge and training in the field of Sport Science and Physical Education through the acquisition of both the theoretical and practical scientific background (in the contemporary trends in teaching methodology and organization of effective learning environments that encourage interdisciplinarity) and study skills, analysis and interpretation of contemporary scientific research. In that way, graduates of the program will be able to function as productive strains in the area of education or sports and will fully meet the requirements of the present but also tomorrow's social reality. In addition, the general objective of the program is the specialization of its graduates, in one of two directions offered (Physical Education Pedagogy and Coaching). The selection and allocation of the courses is organized in such a way that all students will be able to deepen their scientific knowledge in the various fields of Physical Education and Sports and will be specialized in one of the two specializations offered the content of which covers in depth the contemporary requirements in each of the fields mentioned. 

Additionally, the objectives of the Master Program of studies are:

  1. To help meet the educational needs, at graduate level, for physical education teachers, primary school teachers as well as athletes, coaches, sports officials,  administration executives in sports organizations in the private and public sector.
  2. To give the opportunity to young researchers to develop activities in the private and public sector, to benefit themselves and the society as a whole.
  3. To assist in enhancing research and interdisciplinary cooperation, on the issues of Physical Education and Sports at national, regional and international levels.
  4. To assist in the development of innovative educational methods, methodological tools and techniques, and to the improvement, desi;gn and implementation of education and training programs for teachers and other professional groups in Physical Education and Sports.

In addition, students are expected to receive important knowledge from the offered courses. This knowledge combined with the practical completed projects throughout the program, will contribute to gaining experience that will help them develop in all aspects of physical Education & Sports. 

Furthermore, it is expected that research in Physical Education in the various sectors of education and society will be promoted. Also, the development of cooperation networks among social partners at national level, as well as the creation of networks for research and cooperation on issues of common interest and concern. Through these networks it is expected that the role of research in Physical Education & Sports will be strengthen and experiences will be gained which will contribute to the emergence of important issues as high-priority issues at the national and regional level. To this direction, beyond the education sector, it is expected that it will involve agencies and services in the public and private sectors as well as distinguished scientists from institutions of higher education in Greece and elsewhere.  

Special Objectives of the Program

Based on the general purpose and the reasoning in the design of the Master Program in “Physical Education & Sports”, the program aims specifically that students will possess documented and applied knowledge in both specializations (Physical Education Pedagogy and Coaching). The targeted objectives of the Program are the following:

  1. The deepening and exploring of topics related to Physical Education, Sports and the ideals of them in the school Physical Education environment.
  2. The production of knowledge through research in the field of sport, particularly in content knowledge matters of the Master Program and the dissemination of research results among institutions and organisations of the Cypriot society.
  3. The identification of the factors and the most effective mechanisms, strategies, techniques and tools, with which Physical Education & Sports’ matters will be promoted in education.
  4. The emergence and application of new knowledge about the relationship of physical activity and learning performance, or the addressing of psychological and other problems at school through exercise.
  5. The deepening on contemporary methods and practices in teaching Physical Education at all grade levels, aiming to the psychophysical shaping of the child and the teenager as well as adopting a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
  6. The deepening on modern directions of Physical Education, oriented to health. Where the effects of immobility, due to the contemporary lifestyle, are studied in relation to health reinforcement and promotion.

The study and investigation of evolutionary methods of maximizing the athletes’  physiological capabilities and their movement skills, in order to maximize their  athletic performance.

Intended learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the Master Program in Physical Education, students are expected:

  1. To possess knowledge and information for the latest trends in teaching methodology and in pedagogy science and to develop self-learning mechanisms in this area.
  2. To apply contemporary theoretical approaches in teaching.
  3. To apply contemporary fundamental scientific principals relevant to the athletic activities in childhood, prepubertal and adolescence age.   
  4. To understand the contribution of Physical Education and Sports in the development of the quality of life in Cyprus.
  5. To understand the ways of enhancing the individual aspects of the beneficial effect of exercise on physical and mental health.
  6. To evaluate and utilize research findings in education and sports.
  7. To identify and search social, political, financial, environmental, cultural and other components that affect the participation in Physical Education & Sports as individuals or in groups.
  8. To develop, apply and evaluate Physical Education & Sports Programs at school and in the community, to connect the school life with the social reality and to implement involvement / collaboration strategies with parents and the community, during the application of Physical Education & Sports Programs.
  9. To know the process of policy-making in Physical Education &  Sports, to demonstrate skills of critical analysis regarding the formulation of such a policy and to understand the role of civil society and the active processes in the formulation of such a policy.

Especially for the Specialization of Physical Education Pedagogy, graduate students will be able:

  1. To apply innovative approaches in their teaching.
  2. To develop design abilities, evaluate, explain and rank the ability level of school aged children in school Physical Education.
  3. To understand the criteria for the selection of the appropriate test and the  high standardization and implementation of physical activity tests. 
  4. To organize, apply and evaluate Physical Education Programs in primary and secondary education. 
  5. To describe the latest scientific developments and scientific data that arise in the field of school Physical Education.
  6. To design Physical Education Programs in primary and secondary education focusing on maintaining children’s interest for the course and the promotion of physical activity and other health behavior components in and out of school.

Especially for the Specialization of Coaching, graduates will be able:

  1. To describe the latest scientific development and scientific data generated in the area of competitive sports.
  2. To select the appropriate method for the achievement of a particular coaching objective relevant to the development of one of the physical abilities of the body, based on the personal abilities of the trainees.
  3. To compile a daily training program based on the age characteristics of the trainees.  
  4. To design and organize coaching programs focusing on the fitness development of athletes in group and individualized sports.
  5. To evaluate the components of fitness and identify the factors that affect athletes’  performance in group and individualized sports.
