The program aims to develop competent professionals, able to promote innovative educational models that would reinforce the knowledge and skills needed for the propagation of sustainable development, protection and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources. The programme will provide students of various professional backgrounds with opportunities to closely examine educational, environmental and sustainable development issues on a theoretical and practical level. Students will develop their scientific and professional activity within the field of Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development in formal, informal and non formal educational settings.

Key Learning Outcomes

Students are expected to:

  1. Identify contemporary global, regional and local environmental and sustainable development issues and develop ways of controlling or rectifying these issues, by applying systemic, critical and creative problem solving strategies.
  2. Compare the various theoretical and philosophical backbones of Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development through time, and educational and social movements that influenced them.
  3. Apply key strategies and pedagogical techniques for Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development in formal educational settings.
  4. Design, organize and implement educational programmes for the environment and sustainable development in both formal and informal educational settings.
  5. Integrate biodiversity issues, and specifically the biodiversity of Cyprus, in their professional practice.
  6. Design research activities in the field of the education for the environment and sustainable development using appropriate research paradigms and evaluate research literature by referring to methodological paradigms, soundness of research questions, appropriateness of literature review, and validity/reliability of data collection and analysis.
  7. Justify the need for developing a new set of values as necessary ideological equipment capable of defining human responsibility towards nature, through the knowledge of fundamental theories of environmental ethics, as well as the pedagogical techniques for values development.
  8. Effectively integrate information and communication technologies (i.e. multimedia, computer mediated communication) into formal and informal educational programmes for the environment and sustainable development.
  9. Collaborate with the local community, parents, local authorities, the private and public sector and all interested parties, for the development of sustainable schools and be able to develop the local sustainable agenda for the school and the local community.
  10. Critically compare various international, European and national policies for environment and sustainable development and the corresponding development and implementation procedures.
  11. Make effective use of media for raising public awareness and the sense of responsibility for the environment and sustainable development issues.
  12. Design and Implement strategies that will enable companies, associations and organizations to measure their impact on the environment and use tools and methods used for shifting towards an environmentally friendly operation.

Occupational Profiles of the Graduates

The graduates of the Program will have the knowledge and skills required for the design and implementation of educational programmes for the environment and sustainable development. Educators from all levels of formal education (Pre-school, primary education, secondary education, technical professional education) are expected to acquire the knowledge and expertise to act as hubs for education for the environment and sustainable development in their schools, or to be assigned consulting or curriculum development duties by educational authorities. Professionals coming from public and semi-public or private organisations, whose work is related to the environment and sustainable development, or NGOs, the Media, and stakeholders from local authorities, are expected to become able to develop and coordinate operations that relate to education for the environment and sustainable development.
