A Memorandum of Cooperation with the aim of making Limassol a climate-neutral and smart city by 2030 was signed by Frederick University and the Municipality of Limassol. The Memorandum was signed on Friday, October 14, by the Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Nikos Nicolaides, and the Vice President of the Council of Frederick University and Director of Administration and Finance, Dr Christoforos Charalambous.

Limassol was recently selected as one of the 100 cities in the European Union to participate in the EU Mission Cities mission, with the goal of becoming climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. Through the Memorandum of Cooperation, the Municipality of Limassol and Frederick University express their intention to cooperate in the development of the City Climate Convention through an ambitious plan that will incorporate new technologies for implementing innovative actions for the green and digital transformation of Limassol, which will have environmental, economic, and social impact and multiple benefits for its residents.

As stated by the Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Nikos Nicolaides: "Our municipality is already cooperating with Frederick University on matters related to the Blue Economy, marine and coastal environments, and the signing of this Memorandum is another significant step that strengthens our cooperation for the implementation of the actions required by the EU Mission Cities mission. The significant research work of Frederick University, as well as its participation in academic networks, research centers, and international organizations, provide us with access and knowledge to implement best practices that will help us achieve the goal of making Limassol a climate-neutral and smart city by 2030."

Dr Christoforos Charalambous, Vice President of the Council and Director of Administration and Finance at Frederick University, stated: "We have the expertise and the necessary infrastructure to develop innovative solutions that will contribute to achieving Limassol's sustainability goal. This is our aim through our collaboration with the Municipality of Limassol."

Frederick University will focus on issues related to the city's marine and coastal zone and will contribute to the areas where the entire mission for a climate-neutral and smart Limassol by 2030 will be concentrated: transportation, circular economy, energy efficiency, protection of the terrestrial and marine environment, urban planning, culture, and tourism of the city.

Frederick University is collaborating with the Municipality of Limassol for the organisation of Blue Limassol Forum, which promotes the Blue Economy and discusses challenges that coastal cities like Limassol face. In addition, Frederick University conducted an environmental study for the Municipality of Limassol regarding the effective management of risks to the coastal and marine environment of Limassol. This study is the first to identify and assess, comprehensively and collectively, environmental risks in Limassol. The study was presented last March during the 2nd Blue Limassol Forum, highlighting the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to jointly address environmental risks, with the ultimate goal of ensuring sustainability and the quality of life for citizens in the coastal city.
