Department of Arts and Communication

The department's philosophy resides in a balance of visual, oral, and written intelligence in the fields of Art and Design. Primarily concerned with the power and value of concepts and ideas, the Department of Arts and Communication explores the dissemination of knowledge and messages, both persuasive and informative, to defined audiences. Understanding the process of identifying visual issues and analyzing the techniques of resolution and transmission the Department employs contemporary methodologies and cutting edge means of production.

Visual intelligence, which is not easily assimilated as oral and written intelligence, is viewed as the acquisition of critical and intuitive visual discrimination in the process of mark making and the construction of imagery, the delivery of words and the understanding of underlying icons, symbols and visual triggers. Visual lateral thinking and appreciation of subliminal elements in Art and Design interpretation is seen in relation to how all forms of imagery are delivered, received, deciphered and understood by appropriate audiences and viewers.

We are living in a time when the media industry is undergoing unprecedented transformation and expansion. The programme of studies offers the opportunity to combine a critical study of journalism and acquire a range of professional journalistic skills including new media technologies, thus matching today's requirements and demands. The programme, which combines theory and practice, is continually updated to meet the swift pace of change within the industry and academic media disciplines. The department offers a programme that emphasizes critical thinking and the analysis of social dynamics through traditional and new media, and the fundamentals of research, reporting and writing. Fred TV and Radio Frederick, which form part of the University'€™s resources, serve as training grounds for the students of Journalism.  Professional outfits such as Radio Frederick and Fred TV, [part of the University resources], and other strategic collaborations with local media provide students with a real working environment for practice. Our graduates leave as skilled practioners, critical thinkers and engaged, active citizens.

Welcome Message by the Dean

The School of Arts, Communication and Cultural Studies at Frederick University consists of the Department of Arts and Communication and the Centre of Languages of the University. The School offers a wide spectrum of programs of study. It focuses on Creative Design with programs such as Graphic and Advertising Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design and Image, and Audiovisual Communication as well as Interidisciplinary Design, Fine Art, Communication, Journalism and Mass Media, at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD level.

The Arts and Communication Department is of fundamental importance to the School and therefore to Frederick University. It has a long and successful history in the academic activities of the university and a rich legacy of valuable contribution to the arts and culture of Cyprus due to its dynamic and outward-looking approach.

The courses in all our educational programmes are taught by distinguished professionals from all spectrums of the field: designers, applied art scholars, art directors, artists, historians, journalists, art critics, and professionals with national and international achievements both in practice and in research. Their work and publications are well-known and respected by the scientific community worldwide. The School uses a fascinating, multicultural approach with respect to diversity and emphasis on the globalization of communication.

The two main aims that depict the vision of the School are:

  • Emphasis on the development of professional skills. This aim focuses on the acquisition of the necessary techniques, skills and methodologies that are necessary for students to assume productive roles in their professional community, either as creative designers, applied arts scholars, artists, or as journalists and communication professionals.
  • Development of both critical thinking and the historical perspective that are required for a student to become a fruitful member of the society, with vision, creativity, new ideas, and problem solving skills.

The School is one of the most important centres for the study of Visual Arts and Culture as well as the study of the Art of Communication within the Republic of Cyprus. It embraces and explores the interconnection between Art, Design and Communication within the environment of a contemporary society that deals with continuous challenges. The School aspires to further enhance its already firm and solid position as an educational centre of excellence not only within Cyprus, but in the emerging South-East Mediterranean educational hub.

We strive to educate people, who will be able, with imagination and resourcefulness, to make responsible communication and design contributions to the formation of the society, especially the future society, whose challenges are already becoming evident.

Professor Costas Mantzalos,
Dean, School of Arts, Communication and Cultural Studies
