Department of Fine and Applied Arts

The Applied Arts department inherits the experience of the Art, Design and Communication department of FIT, which has been successfully running for 23 years, driven by the concept of a harmonious co-existence between Art, Society, Culture, Environment and Man.

The department’s philosophy resides in a balance of visual, oral, and written intelligence in the Art and Design process. The Art and Design process is primarily concerned with the power and value of concepts and ideas in the dissemination of knowledge and messages, both persuasive and informative, to defined audiences. Art and Designers are involved in the process of identifying visual issues and analyzing methods of resolution and transmission.

Visual intelligence, which is not easily assimilated as oral and written intelligence, is viewed as the acquisition of critical and intuitive visual discrimination in the process of mark making and the construction of imagery, the delivery of words and the underlying understanding of icons, symbols and visual triggers. Visual lateral thinking and appreciation of subliminal elements in Art and Design interpretation is seen in relation to how all forms of imagery are delivered, received, deciphered and understood by appropriate audiences and viewers.

Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture aims to offer the Cypriot society as well as the wider international scene the profile of the contemporary architect. An architect capable of managing all the new challenges of our times and creatively addressing the new settings and dynamics that characterise the contemporary production of structured environments. Sensitive to any form of local distinctiveness but aware of the trends and dynamics that are defined in the global setting. Effective in the production of creative and original synthesis of artistic education and technological skills as well as theoretical knowledge and practical application. A modern creator that has learned how to learn so as to ensure his/her continual professional development and who has developed critical thought to ensure the selection of the best applicable choices, working towards the development of a personal architectural identity instilled with sensitivities for the society, the place and the civilisation but with passion for the new, the special and the innovative.

The ambition of the Department is to constitute in the immediate future a model environment of architectural education that will stand out and distinguish itself for the individuality of its academic and strategic choices in relation to teaching and learning practices as well as the parallel development of a considerable research body of work in the general field of Architecture.

The Department will operate based on the following principles:

  • Education based on Learning Outcomes
  • Education that is student-centric
  • Education that addresses the need for professional qualifications
  • Synergy of Theory and Practice
  • Setting the Studio as a field of synthesis of architectural knowledge
