Panagiotis Altanis, holds a PhD in Social Work and Social Policy from the University of Bradford, UK. He holds a degree both in Social Work from the HTEI of Patras, and in Political Science from the ‘PANTEION’ University, Athens, MSc in Health Services Management, and PD in Pedagogical Studies, and MA Research Methods.
Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Social Sciences at Frederick University. Between 2013-2018 he served as the Chairof the Department and Director of the undergraduate program on “Social Work” and the postgraduate program on “Social Work and Social Administration”. He worked on research projects and taught postgraduate level courses on ‘Management Health’ and ‘Social Care Services’ in the National School of Public Health, Athens (2005-2013). He has worked as a social worker in the Community Social Welfare Service (1979-1983) and in the Regional General Hospital of Attica “KAT”, Kifissia (1983-1996). He also worked as Scientific Advisor, in the Greek Ministry of Health and Welfare (Deputy Minister of Welfare) and participated in the planning and implementation of modern health and social care programs (1996-2003).
He was the Chairman of the following Greek public welfare organizations: (a) Welfare Organization “National Centre for Social Solidarity” (2010-2012), and (b) ‘Penteli’ Childcare Center (2003-2005). He was also an elected member (1995-1997) and is currently an honorary member of the Board of KETHEA (Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals), Greece.
He was the elected president of the Greek Social Workers Association (1981-83; 1990-92; 1992-94; & 1994-96). One of the founding members (1986) and up to present senior member of the editorial and Scientific Board of the journal “Social Work - Review of Social Sciences".His main academic and educational interests focus on Child Rights and Childcare Policies, Family Social Work and Support Policies, Community Social Work and Community Development, Social Support and Inclusion of Vulnerable People and Minorities, Social Planning in Social and Health Care Organizations, Health and Social Care Services Management, Welfare Network Planning, Development and Coordination, Social Welfare Development and Management and Solidarity Organizations, Electronic Governance, Welfare Projects and Policies Monitoring and Evaluation. His professional and research interests include topics related to planning, development, integrating, monitoring and evaluation of welfare policies, services and networks, and planning local social care interventions and actions in specific areas of applied social science such as poverty and social exclusion, child care and social support of families in crisis, gender equality, care of elderly people, rights of people with disabilities, prevention and rehabilitation of people with addictions, community development and social care of vulnerable people and minorities.
