Prof. Lora Nicolaou

Short CV

Lora Nicolaou is a Professor at Frederick University (Department of Architecture) and has been a faculty member since 2011. She teaches at the Integrated Masters Course in Architecture, design studios with focus on the contextualisation of architecture, and two theory classes, an introduction in Landscape Architecture and Urbanism (principles of masterplanning design). She is an architect and planner, with postgraduate studies in Advanced Architectural Studies, Urban design and Urban Planning. She was the Director of Urban Strategies at DEGW (London 1998-2009) with an extensive design, research and consultancy portfolio in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. In parallel she held the positions of the Head of Research for the Urban Renaissance Institute (URI) at the University of Greenwich, UK (2004-2010). Lora also taught previously at Coventry Polytechnic (course co-coodrinator1987) Oxford Brookes University (Joint Centre for Urban Design, part-time senior lecturer 1989-2000) and the University of Cyprus (visiting Associated Professor 2011). She is a co-founder of UPDU (Urban Planning and Development Unit) at Frederick University. Her portfolio includes planning policy research, masterplanning, urban planning and architectural design consultancy. Her particular interest is the interpretation of user’s needs & preferences in a way that can intelligently inform building design and integrated and sustainable development strategies. Recently, she was elected as a representative of the Town Planners on the council of ETEK (National Technical Chamber of Cyprus) with a parallel appointment, as a representative of the president of ETEK, on the Cyprus Town Planning Council.

Η Λώρα Νικολάου είναι αρχιτέκτονας και πολεοδόμος, με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στον αστικό σχεδιασμό και επαγγελματική αναγνώριση πολεοδόμου στην Κύπρο Ελλάδα και το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Eίναι Καθηγήτρια στο Τμήμα Αρχιτεκτονικής, της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής, του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick διδάσκοντας μαθήματα στον τομέα του αστικού σχεδιασμού. Διδάσκει στο Integrated Masters Course Αρχιτεκτονικής, σε στούντιο σύνθεσης που ειδικεύεται στην ενταξη της αρχιτεκτονικής στο πλαίσιο του αστικού δομημένου χώρου και θεωρητικά μαθήματα Αρχιτεκτονικής Τοπίου και Πολεοδομίας (αρχές σχεδιασμου masterplan).Διετέλεσε ως διευθύντρια του τμήματος ‘Urban Strategies’ της DEGW στο Λονδίνο (1998-2009) με εκτεταμένο χαρτοφυλάκιο έργων αρχιτεκτονικής, αστικού σχεδιασμού και πολεοδομικής έρευνας. Ήταν παράλληλα επικεφαλής του τμήματος έρευνας του ‘Urban Renaissance Institute’ του Πανεπιστημίου του Greenwich (2004-2010). Δίδαξε επίσης στο Πολυτεχνείο του Coventry (1987) Oxford Brookes University (Joint Centre for Urban Design) (1989- 2000), και Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου(2011). Έχει ιδρύσει συμβουλευτικό γραφείο σε θέματα αρχιτεκτονικού σχεδιασμού, masterplanning, αναπτυξιακών στρατηγικών και περιβαλλοντικής έρευνας. Τα ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέροντά της επικεντρώνονται στην ερμηνεία των αναγκών και προτιμήσεων των ‘χρηστών’ με τρόπο που να μπορούν να συμβάλλουν εποικοδομητικά στον ‘έξυπνο σχεδιασμό’ κτιρίων και στις στρατηγικά ‘ολοκληρωμένες’ αναπτύξεις με βάση αρχές αειφόρου σχεδιασμού. Πρόσφατα, εξελέγη ως εκπρόσωπος των Πολεοδόμων στο συμβούλιο του ΕΤΕΚ (Εθνικό Τεχνικό Επιμελητήριο Κύπρου) με παράλληλο διορισμό, ως εκπρόσωπος του προέδρου του ΕΤΕΚ, στο Πολεοδομικού Συμβουλίου Κύπρου.
