Short CV
Susan is a consultant as maritime law expert, contributing to Frederick University’s MA and LLM programmes in maritime law and shipping business. Susan also works with Solent University’s Warsash Maritime School, where she is course leader of the Postgraduate Diploma in International Trade and Maritime law. This is a programme offered on a distance learning basis and designed for professionals working within the maritime and trade sector or lawyers needing to understand more about that sector. In addition, she is course leader of the BSc in Shipping and Logistics for HST Akademie Hamburg, a course offered by HST in collaboration with London Metropolitan University. This course is aimed primarily at young shipping and international trade professionals working in Hamburg, which lies at the heart of the German shipping market. Susan is visiting lecturer at Cass Business School (City University) and is also visiting professor at Bologna University’s Law School (Italy). She participates at academic seminars, last year (2021) presenting papers on “Interpretation of contracts: from old to new or ‘same old’?” for Solent University and on “The reality of the defences under the Hague/Hague-Visby Rules” for Marmara University (Istanbul, Turkey). In addition to her academic work, Susan undertakes in-house legal training for law firms and commercial organisations, such as Thomas Miller (P&I), CBH Group (Perth, Australia), the Belgium Maritime Law Association. She also speaks at and chairs commercial shipping seminars and events, recently giving lunchtime seminars for the Commodity Arbitration Club. Before going into academia Susan qualified as a barrister and subsequently worked in P & I. She was for many years a law consultant and arbitration examiner for the Grain & Feed Trade Association (“GAFTA”), for whom Susan continues to participate in training seminars. She has for 30-odd years taught for the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers’ courses and its maritime law corporate training programmes and was for many years the Institute’s examiner for Legal Principles.
