Dr. Loucas Papadakis was awarded with both the Diplom and the Doctor Title in Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University Munich (TUM) in Germany in 2003 and 2008 respectively. He worked as a research associate from January 2004 until October 2008 at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) of the Technical University Munich. He is a member of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Frederick University since Fall 2008 and currently possesses the position of Assistant Professor. He teaches in under graduate and postgraduate programmes of studies in the School of Engineering and particularly in the Mechanical Engineering Department and serves as the Coordinator of the BSc Automotive Engineering programme of studies since 2018. During his studies and research work he completed industrial placements and research projects in cooperation with renowned companies in Germany like Eurocopter, EADS, AUDI, Volkswagen, ThyssenKrupp and MTU as well as with diverse software developers. Dr. Papadakis’s interests span wide spectrum of the engineering disciplines. His major research achievements involve the development of computation chains for supporting the manufacturing and quality prediction of vehicle structures. Having gained a deep understanding in novel manufacturing processes through his close cooperation with the industries in Germany and by being involved in several research projects and industrial consortia, he succeeded to adapt manufacturing process sequences including their physical phenomena into a multi-stage structural simulation chain for vehicle light-weight structures by means of the finite element analysis. He has been the national point of contact for three European collaborations: in the area of automotive joining processes (CRABLACS, CORNET), in the area of manufacturing of aero-engine components by means of additive manufacturing (266271 MERLIN, EC FP7, www.merlin-project.eu) and in the area of supporting midcaps and SMEs for uptaking additive manufacturing by bridging gaps in the digital process chain (768775 AMable, EC H2020, www.amable.eu). Currently, he acts as a member of the management committee of the COST Action “Reliable roadmap for certification of bonded primary structures” CERTBOND (CA18120, www.cost.eu/actions/CA18120/) focusing on the certification of bonded primary structures. He is the coordinator of the budget allocation, evaluation, performance and approval of Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM) and ITC Conference Grants. Finally, his intensive and extensive Europe-wide involvement in additive manufacturing related projects, has offered him the opportunity to participate as a senior researcher in the DEFEAT Project funded by the Foundation for Research and Innovation (IDEK) under the Restart 2016 – 2020 programme dealing with the development of innovative insulation fire resistant materials from the construction and demolition waste by means of 3D printing. Dr. Papadakis is fluent in German, English and Greek.
