Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Identify and describe the role of language and its importance in the representation of reality.
  2. Describe and discuss the relationship between language, society and education in order to give a social substance to the meaning of literacy.
  3. Critically analyse and examine the the worth of local dialects in language teaching.
  4. Understand the basic meaning of Sociolinguistics, which orients science to research concerning cases of multilingualism, interchanging codes, language diversity, language policy and language learning / acquisition
  5. Propose models and material for L2 teaching.

Course Contents

·    Literacy practices applications in class associated with literacy which the students may meet family and the social environment,

·    Ways in which learning strategies broaden the linguistic and social development in directions provided by literacy,

·    Active participation of students in literacy learning,

·    Dealing with texts that have to do with the every day and social life,

·    Emphasis on the kind of speech, which is created by the socio-cultural environment,

·    Approach of texts as a multilevel, multi-semiotic material,

·    Emphasis on students’ immersion in a social experience and meaning construction,

·    Approach the phenomenon of bilingualism and bidialectism and its types,

·    Developing language material for Greek as L2.

Planned learning activities and teaching methodsThe theoretical part of the module (content of the taught concepts) is delivered by means of lectures, documentaries viewing and discussing as well as workshops engaging students in collaborative learning. Arrangements are also made for outdoors study (field work) for acquiring experiences in the field.
