| Learning Outcomes of the course unit | By the end of the course, the students should be able to:- Describe the basic parameters and views of anthological research in Cyprus and their most significant contributions to anthropology.
- Explore the basic dimensions of Cypriot modernisation through the research and theory of comparative anthropology.
- Participate in issues concerning anthropological research methodology and analysis, and ponder their usefulness in the presentation of anthropological topics in mass media.
- Use their knowledge of anthropological analysis and methodology in order to investigate and present in mass media contemporary sociological issues in Cyprus.
- Formulate their own investigative, analytical research methodology in studying a current-affairs issue anthropologically, so as to become involved creatively in academic, social and scientific mentality.

Course Contents | Introduction to Anthropology: Definition and applications of anthropology. The transition from folklore to anthropology.
Anthropological methods: Ethics, methods and contemporary trends in cultural anthropology. Field studies and the importance of research for the evolution of the science in Cyprus. Hermeneutic texts and the historical frame
Reflections on anthropology in Cyprus: Identity, religion, family, kinship, marriage, gender and sexuality in Cyprus. Changes in the definition and use of personal and public space. Bicommunal relationships, culture and the daily experience in Cyprus.
Comparison and contrast of Cyprus and its surroundings: Overview of the Eastern Mediterranean. Anthropological comparison and contrast with Cyprus. |
