Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explain the terminology, the basic philosophical concepts, its categories, its research methods and its theoretical approaches.
  2. Describe the beginning and the goals of philosophical thought, the relationships between philosophy, science and society as well as the role mission of philosophy.
  3. Analyze philosophical texts and to acquire philosophical education and ability of critical thought.
  4. Approach the basic philosophical problems such as the ontological, the cognitive, the metaphysical and the axiological.
  5. Shape a philosophical theoretical framework in order to participate in observation and presentation of contemporary philosophical movements and research in Greece and Cyprus.

Course Contents

Introduction to Philosophy: The scope of philosophy. The beginning and the goals of philosophical thought. Philosophy in the daily life. The mission of philosophy.

Philosophical research: Induction and production. The origins of philosophical methods. Modern and contemporary philosophical methods. Analytical and hermeneutic methods.  The dialectic matter.

Divisions of philosophy: Philosophy from antiquity until today. A systematic order of philosophy.

Philosophical problems: Ontological, cognitive, metaphysical and axiological problems

The philosophical though and the historical foundation of philosophy: Ancient Greek philosophy, Medieval philosophy

Modern and contemporary philosophy: The philosophy of Renaissance, Rationalism,   the Enlightenment, the German Idealism and contemporary philosophical movements. The contemporary philosophical research in Greece and Cyprus.
