Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Learn the procedure and preparation of presenting a news bulletin.
  2. Use knowledge and skills in writing a news bulletin.
  3. Analyse and structure current-affairs news stories and be able to present them in a news bulletin.
  4. Obtain short television interviews in a news bulletin (TV window, telephone interview, etc.)
  5. Research a news story within the news bulletin with live feeds and reports for breaking news.

Course Contents

Collection of news: Basic principles of collecting and writing news. Categories and sources of news.

Television news writing: Oral presentation of news. Guide to writing TV news.

Television interview: Definition, organisation and preparation of TV interviews.

Television presentation of news:The anchor and his/her audience. Qualifications and skills of the anchor. Preparation of the anchor. Types of anchors and news bulletins. Anchor’s non-verbal communication (kinetics, paralanguage, self-presentation, space management).

Practical exercises: News-casting and news report (political, police, cultural, social and sports news stories). In-class presentation and analysis of news bulletins and anchors from various Cyprus channels.

Planned learning activities and teaching methodsThe theoretical part of the course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, while the empirical part of the course is based on tv presentation practice (speech training, non verbal communication).
