Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explore a “knowledge area” through organized /guided research which will be based on their initiative.
  2. Apply and develop their knowledge about the criteria of evaluating sources so as to be able to choose their basic bibliography which would cover central debates in the “knowledge area” under discussion.
  3. Analyze and present the basic debates, confrontations, different analytic perspectives which are involved in the issue/s under discussion.
  4. Evaluate the data and the basic analytic perspectives, to be able to chose a dimension of the broader “knowledge area” for further exploration, and to be able to situate the conclusions in the context of the broader discussions on the issue/s
  5. Relate and synthesize creatively theoretical, historical, and empirical elements in a work which will be a testimony of their analytic and writing progress.

Course Contents

Presentation of course structure-expectations. Initial discussion of research area/topic and formulation of research agenda.

Completing the library/resource research and submitting a formal proposal with the necessary bibliography.

Reading the chosen/assigned texts.

Re-read and organize the text into formal academic format – focus on substantiation through footnotes/references.

The need for a uniform format.

Submission of chapter one and initial discussion on process.

Critique of student texts for chapter one and planning for the next step. Collect and read data/resources on chapter two.

The focus of the chapter should be empirical, involving an empirical evaluation of theoretical arguments/interpretations.

Writing of chapter two.

Correction of given chapters on the basis of review comments.

Organization of the two chapters into a unity – with introduction, epilogue, bibliography.
