Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Know and comprehend basic significances of Sociology, as society, social structure, social stratification, socio-economic systems, gender, race, nation, population, social classes, nationalism, racism, chauvinism. They should be in position to know the classic works of the pioneers of Sociology as well as the basic sociological theories. They should know the basic methods of sociological research.
  2. Apply / use the basic significances of sociology and theoretical sociological models in order to interpret and explain the social structure, the synchronous society and the basic characteristics of the capitalistic society.
  3. Analyze modern social problems e.g. narcotics, violence in the family, hooliganism, nationalism, racism etc using the theoretical knowledge and the basic sociological methods of research.
  4. Learn to evaluate social problems, practise control and shape critical opinions with arguments and places.
  5. Create and present in the Means of Mass Communication, special researches, reportage, articles, analyses and comments on social questions that occupy the society. They should be in position to propose new ideas and metres for their confrontation and resolution.

Course Contents

Basic Definitions:  Society, social structure, socio-economic systems, gender, race, nation, population, social classes, nationalism, racism, chauvinism.

Pioneers of Sociology: The Auguste Comte, Emile Durkhim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Georg Simmel.

Society:   The human society, the structure and its operation, the society as a system.

Historical forms of social living together:  Gender, race, family, nationality, nation, state and synchronous society. Social-economic systems. Analysis of the phenomenon of nationalism and racism.

Family and Society:  Forms of family, social changes, relations in the family, divorces, violence in the family.

Sociological methods of research:  Basic methods of research,(archival research or Historical methods, longitudinal study, observation, survey research, experimental research) advantages and disadvantages.

Basic sociological theories:  Introduction of the basic sociological theories e.g. posivitism, marxism, functionalism, phenomenology,etc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching methods that we are using during the lesson periods are lectures, discussions, power point presentation, individual and group projects. Lectures are supplemented with film presentations and panel discussions.
