  1. Discuss basic journalistic principles such as accuracy, integrity and fairness.
  2. Analyze what kinds of information make news and why.
  3. Evaluate the sources and resources from which news content is drawn.
  4. Introduce the structure, style and language of news writing.
  5. Demonstrate competence in building news stories and features, from lead through their close.

Journalism and the Story. Principles of News.

Deconstructing the Story, the lead and the supporting information, inverted pyramid.

Sources, resources, cross-referencing, archives and background research.. The credibility of the news. Quotes and attributions.

The language of news.

Hard news- Soft News, the Feature Story.

Style and Genre.

Questions of journalism ethics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks.

Lectures are supplemented with workshop techniques and in-class exercises
