| Learning Outcomes of the course unit | By the end of the course, the students should be able to:- Familiarize terms, concerns and theories of economic nature, on the basis of current developments.
- Explain in depth the link between the economic sphere and broader social relations, on the basis of examples from the whole domain of political economy.
- Analyze in depth special topics of political economy, which are based on current politico-economic phenomena (e.g. welfare state, globalization, economic crisis).
- Explain the development and the basic economic principles of European integration, as well as its impact on the Cyprus economy
- Write analytical, journalistic articles and undertake journalistic reports on the above topics, from a critical and independent perspective.

Course Contents |
The role of the state in the economy - Keynesianism vs. Monetarism, the issue of the budget deficits and public debt. The welfare state and models of the welfare state in Europe. Globalization and anti-globalization movements. Theories of economic crisis and the current economic crisis. European integration and its impact on the Cyprus economy. Debates and discussions on Cyprus's EMU membership
