| Learning Outcomes of the course unit | By the end of the course, the students should be able to:- Describe and analyze the basic concepts of Sociology. Synthesize information from other subjects and from contemporary social issues with the course’s content.
- Define and explain the main characteristics of Sociology and its position in the general context of Social Sciences.
- Use the basic sociological theories and approaches towards the explanation of contemporary societies and the basic types of society in generally.
- Describe the historical forms of social cohabitation and analyze the social evolutionary process leading to the contemporary social realities of state, nation and nation state.
- Describe and evaluate contemporary social phenomena and problems.

Course Contents |
- The basic sociological concepts and their characteristics: The concepts society, institution, social science, socialization, Sociology, the objective of Sociology.
- The beginners of Sociology, the main principles of their theories and the basic sociological theories: The theories of A.Comte, K.Marx, M.Weber and their use for the explanation of contemporary societies.
- The historical forms of social cohabitation and contemporary society: Gens, Tribes, ethnicity, nation state.
- The formation of national state and the national conscience. Patriotism, Nationalism, Chauvinism, Racism: National state and the role of national conscience for its formation. The related phenomena and the need of peaceful co-existence of people and equal dealing with people with different racial, national and religional origin.
- The phenomena of social stratification: The concepts social strata, social stratification, class, cast, slavery.
- Types of society. Premodern, modern and postmodern society. The concept of the type of society and the description of the basic types. Analyzing and discussion for the contemporary changes in the financial, social and cultural context. The relation of those changes with rural communities and the specifications of our geographical and cultural area.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods | 1. The main teaching method is lecture conducted with the help of lecture notes. Lectures are supplemented with group discussions.
