Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explain basic concepts of Developmental Psychology and the factors which have an impact on human development from birth until old age.
  2. Describe the main research methods of Psychology and current specialties within Psychology.
  3. Explain the main areas of development: biological, cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial.
  4. Analyze the main theoretical approaches in development and explain the socio-political factors which influence development.
  5. Analyze the long-term effects of psyho-social and emotional development in the formation of a healthy personality.

Course Contents

Definition of Development: Areas of Development, significant opinions in developmental psychology.

Basic questions in development: Nature vs. Nurture, Continuity vs. Discontinuity, Active vs. Passive development, Sociopolitical factors in development.

Theories of Development: Freud and psychosexual development, Erickson’s psychosocial theory, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development.

Socio-political theories of development: Vygotsky’s theory, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model.

Behavioral theories: Bandura’s social learning theory.

Psycho-social and emotional development: Psychosocial-emotional development during infancy, psychosocial-emotional development during pre-school and school age, psychosocial-emotional development during teenage years, early adulthood and old age.

Theories of Moral Development: Kohlberg’s stages of Moral development, Gilligan’s social theory of moral development.
