Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Describe the major ethical theories and differentiate between values and principles.
  2. Explain the values and principles that guide professional social work practice.
  3. Identify ethical dilemmas and conflicts in direct and indirect social work practice.
  4. Develop ethical-decision making skills both in direct and indirect social work practice.
  5. Examine and use professional codes of ethics in ethical-decision making, both as social work students and as professional social workers.
  6. Identify personal values and examine them in relation to those of the profession.
  7. Develop self-awareness in order to be able to work with diverse groups and in diverse situations.
  8. Examine the impact of culture and diversity on both personal and professional values

Course Contents

Major ethical theories and concepts:  Deontological theory (Kant) & Teleological (Consequentialism) theory. Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development. Values vs. Ethics. Paternalism. Self-awareness.

Social Work Values and Principles: Core values of the social work profession. Beistek’s casework principles: individualisation, purposeful expression of feeling, controlled emotional involvement, acceptance, not-judgemental attitude, user self determination, confidentiality.

Professional codes of ethics. Cypriot, NASW & IFSW Codes of Ethics; Purposes, History and Content.

Ethical Dilemmas: Types of ethical dilemmas in direct and indirect social work practice. Guidelines for ethical decision making. Tools for ethical decision making: Ethical Assessment Screen and Rank-ordering ethical principles.

Introduction to anti-oppressive social work practice. Privilege and Oppression. Basic anti-oppressive strategies. Empathy. Self-awareness.

Planned learning activities and teaching methodsThe taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks. Additional activities include group discussions, documentaries and case studies.
