| | Learning Outcomes of the course unit | By the end of the course, the students should be able to:- Explain the basic aspects of international Human Rights resolutions and the circumstances of their formation and promotion.
- Explain the importance of constitutional fortification of citizens’ right as well as the related articles of the constitution of Cyprus and analyze their content.
- Define the act of judicial power in Cyprus related to the protection of citizen’s rights. Define the origins of the institution of the citizen’s rights protector (Ombudsman) and the reason for its spread.
- Analyze the history, the appointment and the service of the Cypriot Ombudsman and explain his necessity and status.
- Analyze the competence of the Cypriot Ombudsman as the authority for equal treatment and authority for combating discrimination related to national or rational origin.
- Analyze the competence and the modes of intervention by the Commissioner for the protection of personal data.

| Course Contents |
- Basic Human Rights.
- The constitutional fortification of the basic rights and freedoms of Cypriot citizens.
- Judicial Power in Cyprus and the protection of citizens. The Courts in Cyprus.
- The institution of ‘upholder’ of citizen rights. The European Ombudsman.
- The Cypriot Ombudsman. Intervention, the process of investigation and his reports.
- The Cypriot Ombudsman as the authority for equal treatment and the authority in disputes related to national or rational origin.
- The problem of terrorism and the question of the protection of personal data. The commissioner for personal data protection.
