Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Analyze basic concepts of psychopathology and describe the multi- factorial aetiology of mental illness.
  2. Analyze the historical evolution of mental illness and describe the various approaches which explain psychopathology.
  3. Explain the symptomatology of mental illness (Axis I) according to international diagnostic systems and describe how it differentiates from the intensity of symptomatology that is experienced by a functional person in every day life.
  4. Describe the various sociopolitical elements which participate in the aetiology of mental illness.
  5. Describe methods of psychosocial recovery and apply to professional practice.

Course Contents

Definition of abnormal behavior: Definitions of Mental Health (World Organization), Mental Illness and Psychopathology, Diagnostic systems (DSM-IV-TR, ICD-10), Social and political dimensions.

Historical evolution of Psychopathology and Modern theoretical approaches to psychopathology.

Anxiety Disorders: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attack. Post-traumatic stress disorder, Agoraphobia, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Phobias, Epidemiology, Aetiology-Biological, Behavioral-Cognitive, Psychoanalytic.

Affective disorders: Major Depression, Dysthymic Disorder, Bipolar Illness I & II, Post-natal depression, Suicide, Aetiology and Intervention, Biological, Behavioral- Cognitive, Psychoanalytic Approaches.

Psychoses: Schizophrenic Disorders, Clinical Types of Schizophrenia, Aetiology-Biological and Psychological Approaches.

Eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Anorexia Bulimia, Psychosocial Explanations and Interventions.  

Psychosomatic Illnesses: Stress, Biological Approach, Social factors, Behavioral, Cognitive and Psychoanalytic Approaches.

Disorders related to substance abuse: Characteristics of Psychological and Physical Dependency, Different categories of Substances and characteristics of psychological dependency.
