Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Describe the different phases of the interview process with a special emphasis on the social work skills required during the beginning and termination phases.
  2. Define the fundamental characteristics and types of communication.
  3. Identify barriers to successful communication and interviewing in the social work process.
  4. Demonstrate communication and interview techniques and skills through the use of role plays and case studies.
  5. Identify similarities and differences in the interview process with special populations (i.e. children, individuals with diverse backgrounds, individuals with special needs etc).
  6. Identify value and ethical conflicts that may arise during the interview process.

Course Contents

Communication:  Definitions. Types: verbal, non-verbal, symbolic. The communication cycle. Barriers to successful interviewing and communication in social work.

The interview process in social work: beginning, middle and termination phases. Types of social work interviews. Characteristics of the social work interview.

Social Work Interview Skills: listening, open-ended questions, close-ended questions, empathy skills, paraphrasing, reflecting, providing feedback, confrontation, self-disclosure, summary, reframing. Additional skills for beginning and ending the interview. Skills for the beginning and termination phases. Intake and recording skills.

Social Work Interviewing Skills with Special Populations: Skills for interviewing children and the forensic interview. Interview skills with families and in group work. Interview skills with individuals with special needs. Cross-cultural interviewing.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks. Students must also participate in lab two hours/week. Lab activities include small group discussions and exercises, role-plays and case studies.
