Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Describe the gradual changes of the Traditional Family in industrial and meta-industrial societies, as well as the diplerectiation in the structure and function of the family today. Alternative family structures.
  2. Explain how the social crisis today has as a result a systemic crisis in the institution of the family on the whole.
  3. Recognize therefore the necessity of sensitizing the social worker in basic concepts of family therapy for the best possible assessment of family dynamics.
  4. Describe basic concepts of family therapy: the family as a system, its dynamics, the family homeostatis, the family boundaries, the double bing etc.
  5. Describe elementary knowledge from home models of family therapy: a) psychodynamic approach, b) Systemic approach.
  6. Describe especially: a) The Ackerman model psychodynamic approach, b) the Minudrin model (Systemic), c) the Bowen model (Systemic).

Course Contents

The gradual changes in the structure and functions of the traditional family today.

The crisis in the intuition of the family. Increase of divorces and family problems. Alternative family functions.

Necessity for sensitizing the social worker in basic concepts of family therapy for a letter and exact assessment and intervention in dysfunctional families.

Description of certain models of family therapy: The psychodynamic and the Systemic.

Psychodynamic: The Ackerman approach. Intervention skills. Case study.

Systemic: The Minuchin approach and the Bowen approach. Intervention skills – Case study.
