Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Describe differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  2. Explain in a critical way the choices made in various parts of a qualitative study.
  3. Describe and identify various barries in qualitative research and try to solve possible problems (e.g. ethical issues).
  4. Identify pros and contras in various methods of qualitative research methods.
  5. Identify various methods through which they can analyse data and interpret data.

Course Contents

Introduction in Qualitative Research Methodology. Definition of qualitative study elements, identify differences between qualitative and quantitative research, methods of decision making in social studies.

Social Study Design – Data Collection. Recognising the need for promoting qualitative research, identifying different approaches to search social issues and identify various roles for social worker/researcher.

Research Questions and Methods of data collection. Describing the aims and roles of research questions, formation of hypothesis and evaluating data sources.

Methods of Qualitative Study. Understanding of pro and contras of various approaches in qualitative social research: Biography and Narration, Case studies, Ethnography, Grounded Theory.

Qualitative Data Analysis and Results. Understanding various methods of data analysis, data presentation and interpretation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methodsThe taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks.
