Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Comprehend the fundamental definitions and contex of diversity and empowerment within the framework of Social Work.
  2. Comprehend and identify perceptions and prejudices which affect attitudes towards users of social services.
  3. Identify differentiations among societies in tolerating and accepting differentiality.
  4. Identify personal positions and attitudes.
  5. Comprehend the effect of those on interpersonal relationships
  6. Identify groups of those who “differ”.
  7. Identify the reasons and comprehend the effects of differentiality.
  8. Describe ways to deal with those who “differ” from their family and social environment.
  9. Identify various ways of approaching “differentiality” through interdisciplinary cooperation

Course Contents

Analysis of the concepts of diversity, prejudice, minority, social exclusion, immigrant, refugee, mental retardation, disability etc.

Analysis of the factors and reasons which create differentiality.

Consequences of differentiality for the individual and the family (psychological, social, financial, in interpersonal relationships).

Consequences for the society – cultural differences in tolerating and dealing with differentiality.

Prevention and support programmes for individuals with special needs, immigrants, refugees etc.

Legislation relevant to the subjects covered.

Interdisciplinary cooperation at both prevention and support levels.

Methods of social work for preventing and dealing with differentiality.

Implementation of techniques and skills depending on the population group to which the users belong.

Empowerment techniques.
