Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. The aim of the course is to offer students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with fundamental knowledge on delinquency, its social, biological, cultural and legal facets, but primarily to examine the social dimension of delinquency and the contribution of social work in preventing and dealing with it.

Course ContentsThe course offers students an understanding of the extent and nature of juvenile delinquency. Students are acquainted with various theories of the causes of delinquency and the role of the family both as a cause but also for the prevention and intervention of delinquency. The application of social work methods, skills and role for the prevention and intervention of juvenile delinquency are examined.

•    Delinquent behaviour and types of delinquency.
•    The personality of the offender and the dynamics of his family.
•    Examination of various causal factors (biological, psychological, social).
•    Dealing with the problem: prevention, suppression and therapeutic interventions.
•    Social reenactment of the offence and victimization.
•    The role of the social worker and other professionals in handling cases of delinquency – multidisciplinary team.
•    Methodology and intervention techniques through Social Work.
•    Delinquency in Cyprus (statistics, relevant legislation etc).
•    Implementation of community work decrees.
•    Case handling of juvenile offenders by the Social Welfare Services.
•    Good practice examples of anti-crime policy programmes in EU countries.
