Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explain the theoretical background of scientific research, combined with social research aims.
  2. Describe different methods of data collection in social research.
  3. Describe and explain different models of scientific research in social work context.
  4. Compare and evaluate pro an contra of quantitative and qualitative research in different social settings.
  5. Develop skills in quantitative data analysis while using software program SPSS.

Course Contents

Research Process. Steps in Social Research (Theory/ Research Question / Hypothesis / Validity / Reliability / Variables)

Introduction to different research models: history research, evolutionary research, case studies, longitudinal study, ethnographic study, action research, focus groups.

Research Methodology (Population-Sample, Sampling methods, sample size, different kinds of sample, sample determination, collection representative sample).

Methods of quantitative analysis. Data analysis, element analysis, coding, use of SPSS for data entry-data analysis and results exportation, results interpretation.

Ethic Issues in Social Research: Barriers in Social Research, sample protection, truthfulness, ethics contract.
