Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Explain the components of the communication process, and relate those components and that process to public speaking.
  2. List, describe and demonstrate procedures for overcoming obstacles that can interfere with effective public communication.
  3. Demonstrate increased competency at narrative, expository, and persuasive speaking in front of an audience.
  4. Use research, outlines and media aids in the preparation and delivery of speeches.
  5. Understand the importance of effective speaking.
  6. Evaluate the professional codes of ethics from the ACM, the IEEE Computer Society, and other organizations.

Course Contents

Impact of Technology: Recognise the social and ethical impacts that computer technologies have.

Process of Preparing a Speech: Demonstrate the ability to speak coherently and organised in public both in presenting information and in interactive multi-agent discussions.

Developing speech skills: Delivering a good speech. Supporting ideas and organizing arguments. Dealing with audience questions. Construct efficient presentations using electronic means.

Professionals Issues and Public Speaking: Understand the social and professional issues in the social context of computing, professional and ethical responsibilities, intellectual property, social implications of the Internet, privacy and anonymity and computer crime.

Intellectual Property and Rights: Distinguish between the different aspects of socially sensitive issues and explain concepts such as intellectual property, implications of the Internet era, privacy and anonymity and computer crime.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the e-learning platform and the web.

Lectures are supplemented with group preparation for assignments and group presentations. The students are expected to prepare presentations on recent advances in technology or technological flaws in computer science and engineering and are expected to discuss various issues or questions.
