Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Analyze definitions, concepts, philosophical framework of community nursing, the social bases of community nursing, historical elements for the development of community nursing, the role of nurse in the community, the diversity of the community nursing practice, differences of community nursing from nursing that is practised in the hospital, nursing process and theoretical nursing models: applications in Community Nursing.
  2. Describe the classification of communities, evaluation of a community and data collection, health care systems, what is health care system, fundamental characteristics of the health care systems, the main forms health care systems, the health care services provision and the National Health Care System of Greece, the Health care services provision in the State Cyprus.
  3. Discuss primary health care, definitions, concepts and philosophical framework, the Alma-Ata declaration for Primary Health Care, illness prevention and health promotion, levels of prevention, maintenance of health, health - Illness – disease, health promotion and health education in the community. Health education of individuals, families and population groups.
  4. Emphasize to theoretical framework for the study of family theory of systems, structural functional theory for the family, the form of family in the modern society, types of families, nursing care of families, the home visit aim, recognition of problems that families are facing, the family’s health, problems and solutions, advantages and disadvantages of the home visit.
  5. Explain relation between community nurses and family in the home visit, phases of the relation, and characteristics of the community nurses relations with the families, the usefulness and the expediency of community nursing development in the modern society.
  6. Evaluation of the community potentials and obstacles derived from the community, level of health of a family.
  7. Analyze the elements and determination of priorities of care

• Introduction to Community Nursing: definitions, concepts, philosophical framework. The social bases of Community nursing. Historical elements for the development of Community nursing. The role of the nurse in the community. The diversity of the Community nursing practice. Differences between Community nursing and nursing that is practiced in the hospital. Nursing process and theoretical nursing models: application in
• Community Nursing Community and Community Nursing. Definition of community. Classification of communities. Evaluation of a community and data collection. Evaluation of the community potentials and obstacles derived from the community. Analysis and synthesis of the elements and determination of
priorities. The usefulness and the expediency of Community nursing development in the modern society.
• Health Care Systems: Fundamental characteristics of the Health Care Systems. The main forms of Health Care Systems. Health care services provision and the National HealthCare System of Greece. The Health care services provision in the Republic of Cyprus. Social policy and Community nursing.
•  Primary Health Care: definitions, concepts and philosophical framework. The Alma-Ata declaration for Primary Health Care.'' Primary Health Care'' and
• 'Primary care: Nursing and Primary Health Care. Illness prevention and health promotion. Levels of prevention. Maintenance of Health. Health - Illness -Disease. Factors influencing the beliefs with regard to health prevention and practices followed.
• Health Promotion and Health Education in the community: Health Education of individuals, families and population groups. Targeting to Health Promotion. Establishment of objectives and priorities.
• Family and Community Nursing Care: Theoretical framework for the study of family. The theory of systems: the family as a system. The theory of family systems of Bowen. The structural functional theory for the family. The form of family in the modern society. Types of families. The nursing care of families. The family as a customer. Reasons for selecting family approach in Community nursing. Evaluation health status of a family.   Relation between Community Nurses and family during home visit, phases of the relation. Characteristics of Community nurses relations with the families.
• Home visit: Aim. Recognition of problems that families are facing. The family’s health, problems and solutions. Advantages and disadvantages of home visit.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer-based presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks.

Lectures are supplemented with laboratory work and clinical practice.

During clinical teaching students are trained at Operation of centre of health, follow-up and attendance in the work of centre of health,follow-up of advisory customers in the centre of health, evaluation of needs of population of community, attendance in the preparation of programs of education of health and in their application, preparation of visit in the house, visit in the house, evaluation of needs of family and syntax of report on the visit in the house and planning of further care.
