Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Describe the concepts of metabolism, and nutrition.
  2. Explain the metabolism disorders of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
  3. Assess the needs of patients with metabolism imbalances.
  4. Evaluate the needs of medical patients with pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, thyroid function disorders, gastritis, peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis, colitis, anaemia, tuberculosis, hepatitis, AIDS and heart failure
  5. Organize and coordinate the diagnostic and laboratory tests of patients with the respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and blood system diseases
  6. Explain the ways of transmission of infectious agents and the Infection control measures
  7. Practice appropriate nursing care for patients with metabolism imbalances.
  8. Practice appropriate nursing care for patients with pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus, thyroid function disorders, gastritis, peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis, colitis, anaemia, tuberculosis, hepatitis, AIDS and heart failure

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer-based presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks.

Lectures are supplemented with laboratory work and clinical practice.

During laboratory sessions, students develop their skills, taught in the lecture sessions, on simulation mannequins in: insulin therapy, blood glucose test, punctures, blood and blood component transfusion,central venous lines care, elector-cardiogram evaluation, central venous pressure measure, peritoneal  dialysis, so that they can then apply them  successfully and safely at a real clinical setting.

During clinical teaching students are trained at medical wards and cardiovascular units to develop further their clinical skills.
