  1. Describe the basic definitions and concepts of Hospital Acquired Infections
  2. Assess quality operating conditions in the hospital laboratories
  3. Explain measures needed to prevent Hospital Acquired Infections in practice
  4. Describe the health and safety rules, including infection control
  5. Identify the health education needs of patients, carers and their families about prevention and control of Hospital Acquired Infections
  6. Assess risks and to actively promote safety

Course Contents

Introduction to the science of Hospital Acquired Infections: The milestones in the history of Hospital Acquired Infections. The importance and the contribution in the advancement of health sciences

Epidemiology of Hospital Acquired Infections. Demographic statistics

Bacterial resistance in antibiotics Areas of high risk: Intensive Care Units, Surgery theaters, Pediatric units

Measures to prevent and control HAI: Measures relating patients and health-workers

Recording Hospital Acquired Infections. Investigation of endemic and epidemic HAI.

Training health workers on ways of germs transmission, on prevention and on antibiotic use.

Clinical teaching: Monitoring the operation of the Hospital Infection Control Committee. Monitoring, data collection and reporting HAI. Personnel training and supervision. Dealing with accidents (communicable infectious diseases). Staff vaccination (HBV,Influenza, Tetanus). Staff audit with Mantoux test. Cooperation with the Center of Infectious Diseases Control. Hospital waste management. Monitoring hygiene.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer-based presentations. Lecture notes and presentations are available through the web for students to use in combination with the textbooks.

During the Clinical Practice, students develop their skills and apply in practice the knowledge they were taught in the lecture sessions
