Course Contents | This is the first of a series of three courses on urbanism aiming to familiarizing students with the understanding and analysis of urban space. A brief history of urbanity –urban development forms the introduction to the course. A continuing lecture series aims at the development of knowledge on basic issues such as the image and the structure of the city, the social content of urban space, the spatial levels of planning and urban design, compact city and the impacts of densities and building capacities, mobility and land uses on the character of cities. Students are asked to apply their understanding on these issues through a small project that develops tools and skills on perception, analysis and interpretation of urban space. | ||||||||

Planned learning activities and teaching methods | It is the essential introduction to the questions that concern the form and the organization of city, through a historical point of view. The objective of the course is the students’ comprehension of the reasoning that is found behind the transformations of the city and the connection with the economic, social and political dimensions of the structured environment. The students comprehend the city as a field of conflicting ideas and interests and they perceive urban practice as their attempt to manage it. The course will study a short inventory of various theoretical approaches in the questions of urban interventions as imprints of development. The course will also study the mechanisms of development control of the city. | ||||||||
