Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Identify the various renewable energy source technologies and develop understanding regarding their practical implementation in Cyprus.
  2. Exhibit knowledge and understanding of the commercial operation of deregulated power systems.
  3. Exhibit knowledge and understanding of energy system operation planning.
  4. Develop and exhibit critical thinking in the evaluation of energy system security.
  5. Use computational tools for scheduling and control of generation.

Course Contents Part 1: Introduction to Renewable energy sources
Available renewable energy sources. Examination of systems applicable for Cyprus standards. Key factors in deciding the application of specific RES.
Part 2: Commercial operation of deregulated power systems
Structure of electricity markets. Issues regarding the operation of deregulated electricity markets. UK grid system is taken as example for the advantages and disadvantages of deregulated electricity trading arrangements.
Part 3: Energy system operation planning
Activities involved in the economic operation of power systems. Usage charges, short and long term load forecasting and the unit commitment issue. Costs associated with trading energy at generation, transmission and distribution level.
Part 4: Energy system security
Function of On-line Security analysis, security constrained dispatch, co-ordination of preventive and corrective controls, transient and small stability enhancement, and operational activities for voltage stability improvement.
Part 5: Generator scheduling and control
Generation merit order, bidding process, automatic generation control, economic dispatch, equal incremental cost method, β coefficient method.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students are taught the course throughlectures (3 hours per week) in classrooms or lectures theatres, by means oftraditional tools or using computer demonstration.

Topic notes are compiled by students, during the lecture can also bedownloaded from the lecturer’s webpage. Students are also advised to use thesubject’s textbook or reference books for further reading and practice insolving related exercises. Tutorialproblems are also submitted as homework and these are solved duringlectures or privately during lecturer’s office hours.

Some course notes, are handed out to the students at the start of thesemester.
