Course Contents | HISTORY OF ART Introduction to Art History Concepts: Analysis of form, symbol and sign in Art theory. Formalism, Semiotics, Iconography and Iconology. Introduction to 20th Century’s social, political and cultural landscape: Political movements and upheavals in Europe and the Globe, scientific developments and their relation to Art. Introduction to 20th Century Art History Contexts: Transition from the 19th to the 20th century. Analysis and development of Impressionism and transition to Post-Impressionism. Introduction to Modernism: Concepts of Modernism, Grand Narratives, Psychology and Perception in Art. Introduction to Fauvism and Expressionism. CULTURAL STUDIES Transformation of the Synthesis of Medieval Europe to Modern Europe: The Dynamics that Transformed the Face of Europe, from the Renaissance to the Main Revolutions. Towards a Concept of modernism: Efforts of a philosophical and literary definition of modernism. Introduction to Modernism: Concepts of Modernism, Grand Narratives, Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy. Introduction to theorists like Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. | ||||||||

Planned learning activities and teaching methods | The taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of illustrated lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Students’ museum, exhibition and gallery visits are also performed. Illustrated lectures, oral and written exercises, personal historical research, art essay writing, critical discussions and group critiques complement the course. | ||||||||
