Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Identify and discuss the design of costume design using woven, knitted, non -woven and printed fabrics in relation to a given project brief.
  2. Recognize the importance of in depth research in regards of the design of a fabric for a specific product area so as to solve and translate the design needs for the required result in set and costume design,
  3. Examine historical and contemporary references as well as experimenting with alternative materials so that the student makes correct choices and create innovative fabrics that translate the concept of the project brief.
  4. Analyze advanced and more complex problems in textile design through the presentation and analysis of the concepts and theories of different artistic, fashion and architectural movements as well as introduction and analysis of stage and costume design.
  5. Create and experiment colour-ways for the chosen designs.
  6. Choose and create an end product which is visually exciting and which has challenged the students conceptual thought process, showing how important fabric / textile can be to the completion of their set and costume design

Course Contents

Introduction to textiles: Identify and debate on textiles and costume with historical reference. Acquire general knowledge of habits and mores of cultures throughout history as far as clothing and symbolism of fabric is concerned.

Research and methodology: Identify and analyse through primary and secondary research of the importance of textile and clothing design to the artistic and architectural movements presented to them. Discuss the influence and impact on textiles and clothing of these movements.

Experimentation with textiles: Understand the qualities and behaviour of textiles. Associate characteristics of textiles with emotions.

Research and analysis: Analyse and assess the importance of textiles and costume design in specific theatre productions and film and be able to debate on the impact the textiles and costumes have on the characters, feeling and plot.

Presentation skills and final presentation:Apply the knowledge acquired to produce costumes for the play given to them. Experience to apply their artistic identity into other design disciplines. Present and support the choices made. Produce and manage the design of their costume.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of the course is delivered to the students by means of illustrated lectures, extended project briefings and group critiques. One to one tutorials encouraging individuality and identity. Primary and secondary research, student centered practical work, realization of project work.
