Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Identify and comprehend the techniques pertinent to image production and advanced pictorial illustration. Introduce Illustration as a conceptual representation of space.
  2. Develop exhibition curating and design methods. Analyse conceptual research and experimentation.
  3. Exploit two-dimensional and three-dimensional means of representation and establish how various historical, theoretical aspects of spaces are manifested in transient, time based and process-oriented work that will get students to understand alternative uses of museum and gallery space.
  4. Develop an understanding of the creative process through conceptual analysis of spaces expressed in traditional and non-traditional media. Develop a critical approach to the use and application of visual imagery in interior design and especially in museology.
  5. Generate a maturing thinking process linking the stages of research, invention, exploration, development and production by investigating the subjects intelligently through practical, critical and/or theoretical readings and writings. Attain and demonstrate awareness of the context for which a space is created.
  6. Develop and invent alternative, innovative and appropriate methods of illustration techniques in a given situation. Develop aesthetic and personal development and emphasis on a critical and historical understanding of the use of space within our culture.

Course Contents

Introduction to Exhibition Design and Museography: Analysis and organisation of basic museum and exhibition design principles. Museum and gallery visits, In situ work and experimentation.

Introduction to Curating - Advanced conceptual research: Thorough theoretical investigation and complex conceptual analysis. Conceptual presentation of the idea. Referencing and Bibliography systems and methods.

Advanced illustration methods. Exploration of professional illustration techniques, hand drawing and collage presentation development. Model making in specific museographical scale and 2D/3D presentation techniques. Development of personal design styles. Technical development of complex concepts.

Advanced Material Research. Exploration and research of new and innovative exhibition materials and implementation on the conceptual idea. Analysis of technical characteristics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of course is delivered to the students by means of lectures, conducted with the help of computer presentations. Students’ site visits (museum and/or gallery) are also required as well as personal interviews with professionals. Lectures are complemented with studio work on hand drawing, collage, model making and 2D/3D illustration technique and technical drawings. Students are also required to make market research and explore, analyse and present new materials and construction techniques as well as their costing.
