Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Recognize the importance of light in everyday life and particularly in design environments and how this affects humans and spaces
  2. Employ effective lighting techniques in order to manipulate spaces and create moods
  3. Experiment with various unconventional and innovative materials in order to creatively explore and test their suitability in lighting fixture design
  4. Select suitable concepts/ design proposals for manufacturing, either for prototype or mass production
  5. Create work which visually translates, promotes and communicates with the specified audience the required qualities and that stimulates and questions constructively the possibilities and boundaries of contemporary lighting fixture design

Course Contents

Identify with the basic theory of lighting design: Furthermore gain a basic knowledge in the importance of lighting design for the interior designer and recognize the importance of light in everyday life and how this affects humans and spaces. Subjects include: The amount of light needed within a space, the measurement of light and light distribution, the importance of natural light and how to control daylight as well as artificial lighting.

Research Methodology: Introduction to the importance and usefulness of well founded research, methodology and the application of theoretical knowledge into practice, in order to: Categorize the various lighting fittings and lamps available on the market and recognize the different types of lighting needed within different interior and exterior spaces.

Develop suitable concepts and design proposals which question the boundaries of contemporary lighting fitting design: In order to Generate new and fresh visual ideas for a contemporary lighting fitting and to engage in visual references for inspiration.  

Research through Design: Appreciate the process of design through sketching and layout techniques and communicate ideas by the production of small prototype models.

Present and communicate using various visual techniques for manufacture: Presentation of final visual work with great attention to detail, the final model is a working prototype. In order to communicate visuallygreat attention is given to techniques for finalizing a leaflet and portfolio presentation. Students should explain, defend, and initiate discussion and/or debate.

Final Presentation: Students participate in final presentations where ideas are discussed from the initial research stage, through to concepts and final design outcomes.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The taught part of the course is delivered by means of illustrated lectures conducted with the help of computer presentations.

Lectures are supplemented with extended project briefings, practical workshops, exercises, group critiques and individual tutorials.

During student centred practical work, students are encouraged to develop personal research, realization and manipulation in project work.
