Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Recall working methods and develop ideas in relation to the project’s content and its progression.
  2. Recognise cultural products that relate to given subject matter and wider area of investigation and associate them with practical work.
  3. Apply basic principles of composition in the practical work and implement diverse techniques and media to develop and enrich personal visual language.
  4. Experiment with technical issues in the application of diverse materials and explore their artistic possibilities to create visual and contextual associations and metaphors.
  5. Design using 3D forms and demonstrate ability in the application and development of its main principles in order to deconstruct and reconstruct initial forms and shapes into new composition and create new contextual possibilities and readings.
  6. Assess both process and visual outcome of the project/assignment in group critiques.

Course Contents

Analytical drawing will form the initial basisfor each project. Elements of form and colour, texture and tones, surfacetactility and spacious awareness –compositional elements - are studied alongwith ways in which the above elements can be applied in design, providing abroad base of awareness and experience in visual language, designmethodologies, problem solving and expression, using 2D and 3D media. Keypoints as followed:

Introduction to Colour Theory: Emphasis on primary, secondary and neutral colours, use of hues andcontrasts.

Introduction to principles of Design and 3D Visual Arts. To push forward both in a theoretical as well as practicallevel basic principles of Design and the Visual Art in 2D and 3D form; through drawing exercises, experimentation with form,colour, shape, texture, materials and techniques - to introduce the idea ofdeveloping 2D forms into 3D.

Development of Technique, Skills and Expressional Means. Emphasis should be placed on developing drawingskills through observation and analysis of a given object/subject matter aswell as awareness in terms of concept and idea-associations, problem solvingand decision-making.

Integration of theory, analysis, exploration andinnovation. Emphasis on synthesis andintegration of every aspect of an art and design product, referring both toconcept, creative means, in depth research and appropriate associations tocritical issues and ideas..
