Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Describe the basic terms and concerns of economy.
  2. Recognise the domain of political economic as a distinct domain in the social sciences and explain the various factors composing the concept of political economy.
  3. Outline the development of economic systems until today, with special emphasis on the emergence of the industrial, capitalist system.
  4. Explain, evaluate and compare the basic schools of thought in political economy within the political and economic context in which they developed (classical, neoclassical, Keynesianism, Marxism).
  5. Locate the above theories within the contours of contemporary debates (especially in Cyprus) that relate to the economy.

Course Contents

Basic terms in political economy Classical, Neoclassical, Marxist, Keynesian schools of economic thought.

Theories of value, theories of crisis, the functioning and theory of the free market, the main thinkers (e.g. Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes, Marshall, Vilfredo Pareto), the historical context within which theories developed, their differences and similarities.
