Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Familiarize terms, concerns and theories of economic nature, on the basis of current developments.
  2. Explain in depth the link between the economic sphere and broader social relations, on the basis of examples from the whole domain of political economy.
  3. Analyze in depth special topics of political economy, which are based on current politico-economic phenomena (e.g. welfare state, globalization, economic crisis).
  4. Explain the development and the basic economic principles of European integration, as well as its impact on the Cyprus economy
  5. Write analytical, journalistic articles and undertake journalistic reports on the above topics, from a critical and independent perspective.

Course Contents

The role of the state in the economy - Keynesianism vs. Monetarism, the issue of the budget deficits and public debt. The welfare state and models of the welfare state in Europe. Globalization and anti-globalization movements. Theories of economic crisis and the current economic crisis. European integration and its impact on the Cyprus economy. Debates and discussions on Cyprus's EMU membership
