Course Contents

Methodological organization: Re-write chapters 1 and 2 [from independent study II, AJER 402] on the basis of the written comments received. Specify the issues to be addressed in chapters 3-4, in relation to the application to Cypriot reality of the broader issues raised in the theoretical and historical exploration of chapters 1, 2. Consult with related teaching personnel on the structure of the radio program and the “TV documentary/presentation”. The productions must be organized within the framework of the theoretical and historical categories under discussion. Collect the material for the radio and video works [interviews, documentary “shots”, archival material].

Research work on Chapter 3: Quantitative and historical data on the issue under discussion from the Cypriot historical experience.

Develop a research focus on the media in Cyprus in relation to the ongoing work [“how the issue is represented in Cypriot mass media”]. This exploration [including empirical research and rhetorical/interpretative analysis] will be chapter 4.

Use the collected material in order to make a brief documentary/TV presentation on one dimension of the issue under discussion/exploration. The video should be representative of the ability of the student to use the related technology [and techniques for constructing meaning] in order to produce a serious piece of work.

Use the collected material in order to create a radio program on one dimension of the issue under discussion. The radio program should demonstrate familiarity with the technology and the dynamics/aesthetics of radio production.

Recommended and/or required reading:
Textbooks
  • The choice of relevant texts depends on the topic chosen by the student. The Advisor will make sure that there is a comprehensive review of the main currents in the area under discussion in the suggested bibliography.
  • Reader with articles on methodology and work samples
References
  • This is contingent on the student’s choice of subject. The Advisor will make sure that broader data involving empirical research and historical studies on Cyprus are also included so that the research focus is more comprehensive. There will be also emphasis on research material and on data involving film or radio production archives.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course is delivered to the students by means of group meetings and individual consultations.  The students are expected to work on their chapters from AJER 402 and develop subsequently a research plan in order to explore the issues under discussion in the context of the Cypriot historical experience [chapters 3 and 4]  and in order to develop works in various media [radio, film] to present their research.

Their work will be evaluated in a presentation to the teaching staff of the department. The presentation will involve both an oral presentation and answers to related questions on the written text, as well as presentation of the film, and of the radio work related to the research.
