Learning Outcomes of the course unitBy the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  1. Outline the basic local and/or global sociological issues and their consequences.
  2. Describe the most significant world social issues and the means to manage them.
  3. Specify the contemporary changes in social structure and analyse the problems arising from them.
  4. Research and evaluate aspects of contemporary hot topics in sociology.
  5. Create and present a model of social issues through mass media and to develop new methods of evaluating contemporary local and/or global sociological concerns.

Course Contents

Basic principles in sociology and world change: Sociological topics, theoretical approaches and methodology of sociological research.Definition of change. Effects of social change, change in the contemporary era, current changes and future projections.

Women’s issues: The gender, its social positions, equality, eroticism and feminism.

The human body and the society: The effects of society and media on health and the body (eating and other disorders).

Social strife: Crime, social violence and drug abuse.

Education: Cyprus educational system, its evolution, future and social significance. Multicultural education. New technologies in education.

Individuality and racism: Race and ethnicity, minority groups, prejudice, unequal treatment and racism.

Planned learning activities and teaching methodsThis course is delivered to the students by means of lectures conducted with the help of computer presentations.  Lectures are supplemented with film presentations and panel discussions in order for the students to familiarize with the critical approach of mass communication formulate theoretical questions regarding media.
